The Home Herbals & Hedgerow garden -
(herbal recipes, herbal remedies, and herbal home decorations)

The traditional kitchen garden is a very productive one. The herbs & flowers that are planted, tended and harvested, tend to our good health in return by providing us with tasty recipes, healing remedies and beautiful, fragrant decoration for our home.
I have always longed for a quintessential cottage garden, full of colour and beautiful scent, where every plant serves a purpose - whether it is providing food, healing, or beauty. Unfortunately, my garden realities are very far from the dream, I am not a gardening expert, I am not the best gardener, and more often than not, I am wandering around, frustrated with my shortcomings and constantly battling with weeds, slugs, caterpillars and snails. Somehow though, despite my far from perfect garden, every winter I start anew, poring over gardening books & catalogues, with great enthusiasm and belief that this year I will succeed where I have failed before. Each year, the garden patiently forgives me, and lets me do my best (and worst). Nature works with me as best she can, and although I don't have the most productive garden I could have, each gardening year brings new joys, and I produce a little bit more, grow a new plant, or make a new remedy or decoration that I've never done before, and feel that I'm getting somewhere! Why am I telling you this? To convince you that if I can grow, harvest, dry and create with herbs, flowers, and wild plants, so can you!!
Too busy, and life too complicated? Every season provides inspiration - a garden (or any natural space) is a wonderful place to be, reminding us that sometimes it's more important just to sit outside, take a breath, and set aside time to be thankful for what we have, and simply enjoy being a part of beautiful nature and the world around us. Life is not just about 'doing' but about 'being'. It is as British horticulturist, garden designer, artist and writer, Getrude Jekyll (1843-1932) reminds us "A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust." Spend some time outside, and enjoy the fruits of your labours, in recipe, remedy or decorative form. It will be well worth the effort!
There is a wealth of herbal recipes, remedies, and home herbal decorations to be concocted and created by novices and experts alike. Why not make your own - either for yourself or as a wonderfully unique and thoughtful gift for family & friends. The ingredients needed can be simply grown in window boxes, pots and containers, small and large gardens. So what are you waiting for - Get out there and join in!
