hawthorn flower remedy recipe

Hawthorn has always been associated with the heart, being used both medicinally to treat heart ailments, and emotionally to help release the pain of grief or heartbreak. The hawthorn blossoms in May, and I find myself uplifted just by the sight of the beautiful white flowers tinged with pink, and the scent slightly of cherries. Because of the simplicity of this recipe, it is a great one for beginner home herbalists. (The most difficult aspect for me is finding a dry day in my part of Wales to do the collecting, before all the flowers have gone! If that's the case at least I know I have the berries to look forward to in Autumn. Find a Hawthorn Berry tincture recipe here, and a Hawthorn Berry Liqueur recipe here).
Ingredients:*
freshly picked hawthorn flowers (also called mayflowers)
1 litre of spring water
brandy
How to make homemade hawthorn flower remedy:
(1) Gather fresh hawthorn flowers.
(Top Tip: The best time is on a dry morning, after the dew has evaporated but before the heat from the sun becomes too strong.)
(2) Pour 1 litre of spring water into a clean, glass bowl. Sprinkle the hawthorn flowers on the surface until it is completely covered.
(3) Leave the bowl in direct sunlight for 3 hours.
(4) Remove the flowers (do not use your hands on any metal utensils). I like to use a clean, wooden spoon.
(5) Pour 50ml of the liquid into clean, dry dark bottles, add 50ml of good brandy and shake gently.
(6) Repeat as needed.
Dosage:
Adults: 4 drops of hawthorn flower remedy under the tongue, or in a glass of water or fruit juice, three times a day.
